DUNEDIN, Fla. — The Toronto Blue Jays are eager to start the 2025 season strong, and José Berríos has been entrusted with the honor of kicking it off. Manager John Schneider announced on Monday that Berríos will be the team's Opening Day starter, marking his third time in that role for the Blue Jays and the fifth of his career. Given Berríos’ impressive 2024 performance and the way the rotation has shaped up, it seemed like a natural decision. However, Berríos expressed deep appreciation for the honor. “To me, it’s like that feeling you get on the first day of school as a kid,” Berríos said. “You’re excited, happy, and just ready to go. You want that day to come quickly, to meet new people, and to embrace everything that comes with it. In baseball, it’s the same — putting on your cleats, your glove, your uniform, and stepping out for that first game Brendon Little Jersey. It’s always a special day.” The significance of the occasion has only grown for Berríos as his family has expanded. “It’s become even more special now because my three kids are old enough to understand what this moment means. It makes me proud,” he added. With Opening Day on the horizon, Berríos is ready to lead the Blue Jays into what they hope will be a successful 162-game campaign.
